Developers release apps using NS Basic/Symbian OS

New pricing brings it to more developers

October 07, 2008 -- Just a bit more than a month after NS Basic/Symbian OS was released, developers have started shipping apps developed with the tool.

"I'm impressed with how well HandyCards shows up on both my Nokia E62 and my Sony P990i. The 5-way directional pad for the E62 works surprisingly well to emulate a stylus." said Mike Frangiskakis, owner of HandyMed, a medical and educational software firm. "The addition of NSBasic/Symbian to NSBasic/CE and NSBasic/Palm allows me to reach an amazing breadth of devices with an impressive market share."

The product has been shipping since late August. A number of developers have started creating new applications, as well as bringing existing apps from other platforms to Symbian OS devices.

"Having spent an extensive time with NSB/Palm I found NSB/Symbian very easy to work with", said Al Richey, President of RMR Software, creators of the RMR Suite of RMRBank, RMR Car, RMRFuel and RMRExpenses. "[We] had to make minimal changes to the Palm products to allow them to run on S60 and UIQ3."

The company said they are pleased with the response so far. "People are liking what they see and are already very productive." said George Henne, President. "The product itself has been quite stable with very few support issues."

Version 1.0 of NS Basic/Symbian OS is complete standalone development tool, featuring:

The product includes an IDE (Interactive Development Environment) with a graphic design screen, powerful code editor, compiler and installer generator. It is a complete development environment with a total download of less than 10 megs. No additional SDKs are needed. Tutorials and online help make it easy to get started quickly.

Pricing and Availability

The company also announced that pricing of the product has been lowered so that it is accessable to a wider audience.

Applications developed with NS Basic/Symbian OS are distributed royalty free. NS Basic/Symbian OS 1.0 normally costs $149.95 USD for a single user, with an introductory special of $99.95. Pro licenses, which allow full application signing, are $299.95. The toolkit runs on Windows 2000, XP and Vista. The product is available immediately from the company's website.
